Area and Volume Unit Converter

Convert square metres to decares (dönüm), hectares, ares, square feet and acres, and cubic metres to litres, cubic feet, US gallons and tonnes by density.

Version 3

Things to keep in mind:

  • In some regions “dönüm” refers to a different local measure; the official m² value governs title deed and zoning matters.
  • The tonnes result depends on the density you enter; real density varies with moisture and compaction.
  • The imperial (UK) gallon differs from the US gallon; only the US gallon is provided.

Calculator

Area

Area to convert, in square metres. Leave 0 if you only convert a volume.

Volume

Volume to convert, in cubic metres. Leave 0 if you only convert an area.

Material density used for the mass in tonnes. Water is about 1000 kg/m³; 1000 is used if left blank.

After the first calculation, the result updates automatically when you change a value.

About this tool

This tool converts an area in square metres (m²) into the decare (dönüm), are and hectare used for plots and farmland in Turkey, and into foreign units such as square feet and acres. It also converts a volume in cubic metres (m³) into litres, cubic feet and US gallons, and into a mass in tonnes using the material density.

Area conversions

  • Decare = m² / 1,000; are = m² / 100; hectare = m² / 10,000
  • Square feet = m² / 0.09290304; acres = m² / 4,046.8564224

Volume conversions

  • Litres = m³ × 1,000; cubic feet = m³ / 0.028316846592; US gallons = m³ / 0.003785411784
  • Tonnes = m³ × density (kg/m³) / 1,000

Example: a 1,500 m² plot is 1.5 decares, 0.15 hectares and 15 ares. 2 m³ of water (1,000 kg/m³) is 2,000 litres and 2 tonnes.

Example 2: 10,000 m² is 10 decares, 1 hectare, 100 ares, 107,639.10 square feet and 2.4711 acres. A volume of 0.25 m³ is 250 litres, 8.83 cubic feet and 66.04 US gallons; at a density of 800 kg/m³ it weighs 0.2 tonnes.

How to read the result Each output is the entered value expressed in that unit; area and volume are computed separately, and outputs for a field left at 0 show 0. The tonnes result depends only on the density you enter; if you leave it blank, water (1,000 kg/m³) is assumed. For small values you may see differences in the last digit because results are rounded to 2 or 4 decimals.

You can convert only an area or only a volume; leave the unused field at 0. The decare is taken as the metric 1,000 m²; regional local “dönüm” customs may differ. Results are rounded half-up.

How to use

  1. For an area, enter it in m².
  2. For a volume, enter it in m³ and set the density if needed.
  3. Leave the unused field at 0.
  4. Press Calculate.

Notes

The decare is taken as 1,000 m² (metric). Foot and gallon factors are international definitions (1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L). Results are rounded half-up: decare/hectare/are/acre/tonnes to 4 decimals, others to 2.

Frequently asked questions

5 questions
  1. The standard metric decare used in this tool is 1,000 m². So 1 hectare is 10 decares and 1 are is 0.1 decare. Some regions use a different local "dönüm"; for official matters the m² value on the title deed governs.
