Weight Converter: Kilograms, Pounds, Ounces
Convert weights between milligrams, grams, kilograms, tonnes, carats, ounces, pounds, stone, troy ounces and US/imperial tons.
Things to keep in mind:
- The tool converts mass units; force units (kgf, N, lbf) and gravity-dependent weight differences are not considered.
- The fine-gold content and price of gold products are not part of this tool; use the gold tools for that.
- Apothecaries’ units and historic Turkish units (okka, dirhem, batman) are not included.

About this tool
This tool converts a mass (weight in everyday language) between metric and imperial/US customary units, including the carat for gemstones and the troy ounce for precious metals. Next to the result it lists the equivalents in all units and a pounds-and-ounces and stone-and-pounds breakdown.
Formula: result = value × (kilograms per source unit) ÷ (kilograms per target unit)
The factors are exact definitions (1959 international yard and pound agreement, NIST SP 811):
- 1 pound (lb) = 0.45359237 kg
- 1 ounce (oz) = 1/16 lb = 28.349523125 g
- 1 stone = 14 lb = 6.35029318 kg
- US short ton = 2,000 lb = 907.18474 kg; imperial long ton = 2,240 lb = 1,016.0469088 kg
- 1 troy ounce = 480 grains = 31.1034768 g; 1 carat = 0.2 g
Example: 3.5 kg = 3.5 ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ 7.71617918 lb. That is 123.46 ounces in total, so the pounds-and-ounces breakdown is 7 lb 11.46 oz.
The everyday (avoirdupois) ounce (≈ 28.35 g) and the troy ounce used for gold and silver prices (≈ 31.10 g) are different units; choose the troy ounce for bullion. In the breakdowns the total is first rounded to 2 decimals and the whole part is taken from that.
How to use
- Enter the weight you want to convert.
- Select its unit under From unit.
- Select the unit you want the result in under To unit.
- Select Calculate; equivalents in all units are listed as well.
Notes
The main result is rounded half-up (HALF_UP) to 8 decimals, the unit equivalents to 6 and the conversion factor to 10 decimals. "Tonne" means the metric tonne (1,000 kg); the US and imperial tons are separate options.
Frequently asked questions
1 kg = 1 ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ 2.20462262 lb. Conversely, 1 lb is exactly 0.45359237 kg.
The everyday (avoirdupois) ounce is 28.349523125 g. The troy ounce used for gold and silver is 31.1034768 g.
A UK unit used for body weight: 1 stone = 14 lb = 6.35029318 kg. 70 kg is about 11 stone 0.32 lb.
In most countries a tonne is the metric tonne (1,000 kg). In the US "ton" usually means the 2,000 lb short ton; in the UK it historically meant the 2,240 lb long ton.
No. For gemstones the carat is a unit of mass (0.2 g). For gold, karat (14, 22, 24) is a purity grade; use the gold karat tool for that.
