Gold Karat Fine Gold Equivalent Calculator

Enter the karat and weight of a piece of jewellery or a bar to get its fine (24-karat) gold equivalent, fineness and, optionally, its gold value.

Version 3

Things to keep in mind:

  • The result is only a mathematical equivalent: labour, wastage, jeweller spread, VAT and stamp duty are not included.
  • The accuracy of karat and weight depends on the hallmark and scale; have the karat verified by a jeweller or test.
  • The gold price is not fetched automatically; enter the current price yourself.
  • This tool is not investment advice.

Calculator

Item

Total weighed weight of the jewellery or bar in grams. Deduct stones and non-gold parts first.

Karat between 1 and 24, e.g. 8, 14, 18, 22 or 24. If you know the fineness: karat = fineness × 24 / 1000.

Price (optional)

TRY

Current fine (24-karat) gold price per gram. If given, the gold value of the item is computed; otherwise 0. The price is not fetched automatically.

After the first calculation, the result updates automatically when you change a value.

About this tool

Gold purity is measured in karats: 24 karat is pure (fine) gold. A 22-karat item has 22 parts gold in 24, the remaining 2 being alloy metal (copper, silver, etc.). Fineness (milyem in Turkish) expresses purity per thousand (22 K ≈ 916, 18 K = 750).

Formulas

  • Fine gold equivalent (g) = weight × karat / 24
  • Pure gold content (%) = karat / 24 × 100
  • Fineness = karat / 24 × 1000
  • Alloy weight = weight − fine gold equivalent
  • Gold value = fine gold equivalent × 24-karat price per gram

Example: a 10 g 22-karat bracelet contains 10 × 22 / 24 = 9.1667 g of fine gold, 91.67 % pure, fineness 916.67; 0.8333 g is alloy. With a 24-karat price of 2,000 TRY/g the gold value is 9.1667 × 2,000 = 18,333.33 TRY.

Example 2: a 5 g 18-karat item contains 5 × 18 / 24 = 3.75 g of fine gold (fineness 750, alloy 1.25 g). With a 24-karat price of 3,000 TRY/g the gold value is 11,250.00 TRY.

How to read the result Fine gold equivalent is the amount of pure gold in the item; multiplied by the price per gram it gives the gold value of the item only. Alloy weight is the grams of added metals. Fineness and pure gold percentage are two ways of showing the same purity (916.67 ‰ and 91.67 % for 22 karat).

The price per gram is optional and is not fetched automatically; enter the current price yourself. Labour, wastage, VAT and the buy-sell spread are not included.

How to use

  1. Enter the item weight in grams.
  2. Enter the karat (e.g. 22).
  3. Optionally enter the current 24-karat price per gram.
  4. Press Calculate.

Notes

Fine gold equivalent and alloy weight are rounded half-up to 4 decimals, percent and fineness to 2. The gold value uses the unrounded fine gold equivalent and is rounded to 2 decimals. If no price is entered the value shows 0.
