About this category & regulations

To understand a company's position, profit alone is not enough: how large are its debts, is there enough cash, where do costs swell, what is it worth? The accounting and financial analysis tools answer these questions with measures derived from the balance sheet, income statement and cash flow. They are made for founders, finance and accounting staff and students.

How the calculation works

  • Income statement: gross profit = sales − cost of goods sold; operating profit and EBITDA are found step by step by deducting expenses and depreciation; net profit is what remains after tax. Margins relate each profit line to sales.
  • Financial ratios: current ratio = current assets ÷ short-term liabilities (short-term solvency); debt and leverage ratios show debt burden against equity, and profitability ratios show how much profit assets and equity produce.
  • Cost: production cost = direct materials + direct labour + manufacturing overhead; unit cost divides that by units produced.
  • Cash: profit and cash are not the same; free cash flow and the burn rate give the runway.
  • Valuation: company value is estimated by discounting future free cash flows at WACC (DCF) or with multiples.

Things to watch

  • Ratios are not read alone; compare with sector averages and earlier periods.
  • Valuation results are very sensitive to growth and discount assumptions; small changes move value a lot.
  • Inputs come from your own records; results are informational and not investment or financial advice.
