Length Converter: Metres, Inches, Feet, Miles

Convert lengths between millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards, miles and nautical miles, and see a height in feet and inches.

Version 2

Things to keep in mind:

  • When converting very small values into large units (e.g. mm to miles) the 8-decimal limit can make the result look close to 0; use the conversion factor instead.
  • The U.S. survey foot/mile and historic Turkish measures (arşın, endaze, fersah) are not included.

About this tool

This tool converts a length between metric units (µm, mm, cm, m, km), imperial/US customary units (inch, foot, yard, mile) and the nautical mile. Next to the result in the selected target unit it lists the equivalents in all common units and a feet-and-inches breakdown.

Formula: result = value × (metres per source unit) ÷ (metres per target unit)

The factors are exact definitions (1959 international yard and pound agreement, NIST SP 811):

  • 1 inch = 2.54 cm = 0.0254 m
  • 1 foot = 12 inches = 0.3048 m
  • 1 yard = 3 feet = 0.9144 m
  • 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 1,609.344 m
  • 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m

Example: 180 cm = 1.8 ÷ 0.3048 ≈ 5.90551181 ft. That is 70.87 inches in total, so the feet-and-inches breakdown is 5 ft 10.87 in. One mile is 1,609.344 m = 1.609344 km.

For the feet-and-inches breakdown the total inches are first rounded to 2 decimals, the whole feet are taken from that and the remaining inches are shown, so the remainder never reaches 12 inches. The nautical mile is used at sea and in aviation, the statute mile for road distances.

How to use

  1. Enter the length you want to convert.
  2. Select its unit under From unit.
  3. Select the unit you want the result in under To unit.
  4. Select Calculate; equivalents in all units are listed as well.

Notes

The main result is rounded half-up (HALF_UP) to 8 decimals, the unit equivalents to 6 and the conversion factor to 10 decimals. The factors are the 1959 international definitions; the U.S. survey foot (1200/3937 m), retired in 2022, is not used.

Frequently asked questions

  1. One inch is exactly 2.54 cm. This has been the international definition since 1959; it is not an approximation.
