Full Month and Year Difference

Calculate the completed whole years and whole months between two dates, the months beyond whole years, whole weeks and total days.

Version 2

Things to keep in mind:

  • Whole months do not assume “a month = 30 days”; real calendar month lengths apply.
  • For month-end dates (29–31) the result depends on the clamping rule; verify if your contract prescribes a different rule.
  • For legal calculations such as severance, rent or insurance periods, the specific rules of the relevant law apply.

The first date of the difference.

The second date of the difference. If it is before the start the results are negative.

After the first calculation, the result updates automatically when you change a value.

About this tool

This tool calculates how many completed years and months lie between two dates and also gives the weeks and days.

Logic

  • Whole months: the largest n such that adding n months to the start date does not pass the end date. When the day overflows, it is clamped to the last day of the target month (31 January + 1 month = 29 February 2024).
  • Whole years = whole part of months / 12; months beyond years = whole months − 12 × whole years.
  • Whole weeks = whole part of total days / 7; total days = end − start.

Example: 31 January 2024 → 29 February 2024: 1 whole month, 0 years, 29 days, 4 whole weeks. 15 May 2020 → 14 March 2023: 33 whole months = 2 years and 9 months (14 March is before 15 March so the 34th month is not complete). 29 February 2000 → 28 February 2021: 252 months = 21 years.

If the end date is before the start date all results are negative. For a “years, months, days” breakdown of an age use the Age Components tool.

Formula summary

  • Whole months = the largest number of months that can be added to the start date without passing the end date; whole years = whole part of whole months / 12; months beyond years = whole months − 12 × whole years.
  • Whole weeks = whole part of total days / 7 (truncated toward zero for a reversed range); total days = end − start.

Extra example: 15 May 2020 → 14 March 2023 is 1,033 days in total, 147 whole weeks and 33 whole months (2 years + 9 months). If the dates are entered in reverse (14 March 2023 → 15 May 2020) the same numbers come out negative: −2 years, −33 months, −9 months, −147 weeks, −1,033 days.

How to read the result: “Whole months (total)” is the total month count including years; “Whole years” and “Months beyond whole years” express the same span as “X years Y months”. Leftover days are not reflected in these results; use total days for them. Negative values mean the end date is before the start date.

How to use

  1. Pick the start date.
  2. Pick the end date.
  3. Press Calculate.
  4. Read whole years, whole months and the remaining months.

Notes

The month difference follows a “completed months” logic; the day is clamped to the last day of the target month. For a reversed range results are negative. Weeks and days rely on calendar days. Outputs are whole numbers.

Frequently asked questions

4 questions
