Add Business Days to a Date (Excluding Weekends)

Adds business days to a start date while skipping Saturdays and Sundays; shows the resulting date, its weekday and the calendar days in between.

Version 1

Things to keep in mind:

  • Public holidays are not removed automatically; move the result one business day forward for each holiday in between.
  • For businesses or contracts that count Saturday as a working day the result differs.

About this tool

Delivery times, shipping promises, bank transactions and "within X business days" clauses are counted differently from calendar days: Saturdays and Sundays do not count. This tool adds any number of business days to a date and finds the resulting day. To count the business days between two dates, use the business days between dates tool; both use the same counting rule.

Formula

The start day is not counted; the first business day is the first Monday–Friday after the start. If the start is on a weekend, the previous Friday is used as the base.

  • d = position of the start in its week (Monday 0 … Friday 4)
  • t = d + business days to add
  • full weeks = ⌊t ÷ 5⌋, remainder = t − 5 × full weeks
  • Result = Monday of the start week + 7 × full weeks + remainder

Example

Wednesday 14 October 2026 + 10 business days: d = 2, t = 12, full weeks = 2, remainder = 2 → Monday of the start week (12 October) + 14 + 2 days = Wednesday 28 October 2026. That spans 14 calendar days, 4 of them weekend days.

Friday + 1 business day is Monday, and Saturday + 1 business day is also Monday.

How to read the result

The result is the n-th business day after the start. Public holidays are not business days, but the tool does not remove them automatically: move the result one business day forward for each public holiday in between. Legal periods are usually counted in calendar days; use the legal deadline tool for those.

How to use

  1. Enter the start date (this day is not counted).
  2. Enter the number of business days to add.
  3. Read the resulting date and weekday; move it forward for any public holidays in between.

Notes

Counting uses the interval (start, result]: the start day is excluded and the result day included. Only Saturday and Sunday are skipped; public and religious holidays count as business days. Weekdays: 1 = Monday … 7 = Sunday.

Frequently asked questions

4 questions
  1. It depends on the start day, but because weekends are skipped it is usually 14 calendar days. For example, Wednesday + 10 business days is the Wednesday two weeks later.
