Time and Duration Calculator (Hours Between Times)

Work out the duration between two clock times with overnight spans and breaks, or add and subtract a duration from a clock time.

Version 1

Things to keep in mind:

  • Daylight-saving changes and time-zone differences are not taken into account.
  • The tool does not check statutory working-time limits or overtime and night-work rules.
  • In the between mode a span is at most 48 hours (ending the next day); use the date tools for longer periods.

Calculator

Calculation

Calculation (optional)

Start time

0–23, 24-hour clock (e.g. 14 for 2 pm).

0–59.

End time and break

0–23. If the end is earlier than the start, it is taken as the next day (night shift).

0–59.

Applied automatically when the end time is earlier than the start. Switch on for spans ending the next day at the same or a later time (e.g. 08:00 to 10:00 next day).

Total break minutes to deduct; leave 0 if none.

After the first calculation, the result updates automatically when you change a value.

About this tool

The tool has two modes:

1. Duration between two times (work hours): from a start and end time it returns the net duration after the break as hours and minutes, decimal hours and total minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start (e.g. 22:30 – 06:15) the span automatically runs into the next day; switch on Ends the next day for spans ending the next day at the same or a later time.

  • Gross duration = (end − start) minutes, + 1,440 minutes when the end is on the next day
  • Net duration = gross − break, never below 0
  • Decimal hours = net minutes ÷ 60 (rounded to 2 decimals)

2. Add / subtract a duration: adds hours and minutes to a clock time or subtracts them, returning the new time and how many days forward or back it lands.

  • Result (minutes) = start ± duration
  • Day offset = ⌊result ÷ 1,440⌋, time = (result − day offset × 1,440) ÷ 60

Examples

  • Night shift 22:30 – 06:15 with a 30-minute break: 465 minutes gross, net 7 h 15 min = 7.25 h.
  • 23:45 + 26 h 30 min = 02:15, two days later.
  • 01:20 − 3 h 45 min = 21:35 on the previous day.

Decimal hours are ready to multiply by an hourly rate.

How to use

  1. Choose the calculation.
  2. Enter the start time as hour and minute.
  3. For a duration, enter the end time and any break minutes; to shift a time, choose add or subtract and enter the duration.
  4. Click Calculate.

Notes

24-hour clock. Durations are exact to the minute; decimal hours are rounded HALF_UP to 2 decimals. A day is 1,440 minutes; daylight-saving changes are ignored. A break longer than the span gives a net duration of 0.

Frequently asked questions

3 questions
  1. When the end time is earlier than the start, the end is counted on the next day and 24 hours (1,440 minutes) are added. 22:30 – 06:15 is 7 h 45 min.
