About this category & regulations

The effect of an air conditioner on the monthly bill, an electric car's cost per 100 km, the total fuel and toll cost of a trip: energy and transport expenses are often overlooked in budgets because they speak in different units such as kilowatt-hours, litres and horsepower. This page both converts the units and shows the cost directly in lira.

Which tool for which question?

How the calculation works

  • Electricity cost = power (kW) × hours of use × unit price (TL/kWh); if the appliance is rated in W, divide by 1,000.
  • Charging cost = energy drawn from the grid × price per kWh; because of charging losses the energy drawn is larger than what enters the car.
  • Trip fuel = distance × consumption (L/100 km) ÷ 100; total expense is fuel plus bridge, motorway and parking costs, divided by the number of people if shared.
  • Conversion between energy and power units: kilowatt-hour, joule, calorie and BTU express energy; watt, horsepower and BTU/hour express power.

Things to watch

  • The unit price is the value you enter; tariffs (tiers, day-night) change the price.
  • An appliance's label power does not always give actual use; thermostat-controlled devices do not run continuously.
  • Real fuel consumption varies with speed, load and traffic.
