Speed Converter: km/h, mph, m/s and Knots
Convert speeds between kilometres per hour, miles per hour, metres per second, knots and feet per second, and see the running pace in minutes per km.
Things to keep in mind:
- The Mach number is not a fixed speed (the speed of sound depends on temperature and altitude), so it is not included.
- The pace assumes a constant speed; gradients and stops are not considered.

About this tool
This tool converts a speed between km/h, mph, m/s, knots and ft/s, lists the value in every unit and gives the pace per kilometre for the same speed in minutes and seconds.
Formula: result = value × (metres per hour of the source unit) ÷ (metres per hour of the target unit)
The factors are derived exactly from the length definitions (NIST SP 811):
- 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h
- 1 mph = 1,609.344 m/h = 0.44704 m/s
- 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1,852 m/h ≈ 0.514444 m/s
- 1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s = 1.09728 km/h
Example: 100 km/h = 100 × 1,000 ÷ 1,609.344 ≈ 62.13711922 mph ≈ 27.777778 m/s. Someone running at 12 km/h covers 1 km in 3,600 ÷ 12 = 300 seconds, a pace of 5:00 min/km. 30 knots is 55.56 km/h ≈ 15.433333 m/s ≈ 34.523383 mph.
How to read the result The "Result" field is the value in your target unit (8 decimals); the list shows the same speed in every unit with 6 decimals. The conversion factor tells how many target units one source unit equals (e.g. 1 knot = 1.852 km/h). The pace shows how many minutes and seconds the same speed takes per km; the faster the speed, the smaller the pace value.
Pace: seconds per km = 3,600 ÷ (speed in km/h); the result is rounded to whole seconds and split into minutes and seconds. For a speed of 0 the pace is undefined and 0 is shown.
Knots are used at sea and in aviation, mph on road signs in the US and the UK, and m/s in science and meteorology (wind speed).
How to use
- Enter the speed you want to convert.
- Select its unit under From unit.
- Select the unit you want the result in under To unit.
- Select Calculate; all units and the pace per km are shown as well.
Notes
The main result is rounded half-up (HALF_UP) to 8 decimals, the unit equivalents to 6 and the conversion factor to 10 decimals. The pace is rounded to whole seconds. The internal base is metres per hour, so every factor is a whole number or a terminating decimal.
Frequently asked questions
100 km/h ≈ 62.14 mph. Conversely, 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h, so 60 mph ≈ 96.56 km/h.
Divide the km/h value by 3.6: 90 km/h = 25 m/s. Multiply by 3.6 to go from m/s to km/h.
A knot is one nautical mile per hour: 1 knot = 1.852 km/h. It is used for ships and aircraft.
Enter your speed in km/h; the Pace lines show how many minutes and seconds 1 km takes. For example 9.5 km/h ≈ 6:19 min/km.
