Marketplace Returned Sale Loss Analysis

Calculates what a returned marketplace sale costs you: unrefunded commission, unsaleable stock, shipping and other fees, and the loss as a share of the sale price.

Version 3

Things to keep in mind:

  • The sale’s own profit is not counted; the result is the extra loss caused by the return.
  • Commission refunds, shipping and penalties vary by marketplace; enter values from your statement.
  • E-commerce withholding adjustments on returns are not modelled.
  • The resaleable rate is a rough estimate of stock value; markdown losses on resale are not included.

About this tool

A marketplace return is more than a cancelled sale: part of the commission may not be refunded, shipping stays with you, and stock that returns unsaleable is a loss. This tool breaks the loss into parts and shows it as a share of the sale price.

Formulas

  • Commission = sale price × commission rate
  • Refunded commission = commission × refund rate; commission loss = commission − refunded
  • Stock loss = product cost × (100 − resaleable rate) ÷ 100
  • Return loss = commission loss + stock loss + outbound shipping + return shipping + other fees
  • Loss as share of sale (%) = return loss ÷ sale price × 100; 0 if the sale price is 0

Commission, refunded commission and stock loss are each rounded HALF_UP to the kuruş. The result is the extra loss versus never having made the sale; the sale’s own profit is not counted. Commission VAT is deductible, so commission is treated excluding VAT.

Example 1: 249.99 TRY sale, 12.5% commission (31.25 TRY), 50% refunded (15.63); 80% of a 100 TRY cost is resaleable (20 TRY stock loss); return shipping 9.99, other fees 2 TRY: commission loss 15.62; total return loss 47.61 TRY (19.04%).

Example 2 — an unsaleable item: 1,000 TRY sale, 500 TRY cost, 15% commission not refunded at all, item unsaleable (rate 0), outbound shipping 25, return shipping 40, other fees 10 TRY: commission loss 150.00; stock loss 500.00; total return loss 725.00 TRY (72.50%).

Example 3 — an intact item returned: same sale, commission fully refunded, item intact (rate 100), only return shipping of 30 TRY: total return loss 30.00 TRY (3.00%).

How to read the result: total return loss is the extra cost the return causes you; its share of the sale price shows how heavy the return is per sale. If most of the loss comes from stock, the item’s resaleability matters most; if from shipping, your return shipping arrangement does. You can factor this share, together with your return rate, into your pricing.

How to use

  1. Enter the sale price, product cost and commission rate.
  2. Enter the share of commission the marketplace refunds.
  3. Enter outbound and return shipping and other non-refundable fees.
  4. Enter the resaleable share of the product (0 if damaged).
  5. Press Calculate.

Notes

Commission and refunded commission are each rounded HALF_UP to 2 decimals; stock loss is rounded too. Return loss is the sum of the lines. Amounts are assumed to exclude VAT. If the sale price is 0 the share shows 0.
