Packaging Materials Cost Calculator

Computes packaging cost per package from box, filler, tape, label and other materials, including a waste allowance, and the total for a batch.

Version 3

Things to keep in mind:

  • Storage, labour and packing time are not included.
  • The waste rate is your own estimate; base it on past data.
  • Take unit costs from your own purchase invoices; the tool does not suggest prices.

About this tool

Every e-commerce shipment consumes a box, filler, tape and a label. Adding these per package gives the real packaging share to add to product and shipping cost. The tool also adds a waste allowance and shows the batch cost for the number of packages you set.

Formulas

  • Material total = box + filler + tape + label + other
  • Cost per package = material total × (1 + waste rate ÷ 100)
  • Batch cost = cost per package × number of packages
  • Waste cost = cost per package − material total

Amounts are rounded HALF_UP to 2 decimals; the batch cost uses the unrounded per-package cost. Enter amounts excluding VAT; for a VAT-registered seller the VAT on packaging purchases is deductible.

Example 1: box 12.50, filler 1.25, tape 0.75, label 0.50 TRY; 5% waste; 100 packages: materials 15.00; per package 15.75 TRY; batch 1,575.00 TRY; waste 0.75 TRY.

Example 2: box 8, filler 2, tape 1, label 0.50, other 1.50 TRY; 10% waste; 20 packages: 14.30 TRY per package; batch 286.00 TRY; waste 1.30 TRY per package.

Example 3 — no waste: box 8, filler 2, tape 1, label 0.50 TRY, one package: 11.50 TRY per package.

How to read the result: packaging cost per package is the unit packaging expense to add to product and shipping cost; it includes the waste allowance, so it is higher than the plain material total. Batch cost shows the total materials budget for the quantity you entered. Waste cost per package is the extra amount waste adds to each package; if your waste rate is high, it may be worth reviewing materials or the packing process.

How to use

  1. Enter the box, filler, tape and label cost for one package.
  2. Enter any other material cost and the waste rate.
  3. Enter the number of packages for the batch total.
  4. Press Calculate.

Notes

Amounts are rounded HALF_UP to 2 decimals; the batch cost uses the unrounded per-package cost. You enter the unit cost of bulk-bought materials (bulk price ÷ quantity). Amounts are assumed to exclude VAT.
