About this category & regulations

Whether weight and waist are in a healthy range is understood not from one number but from reading several measures together. This page calculates common body measures, from the weight-to-height ratio to abdominal fat distribution.

Which tool for which question?

How the calculation works

  • Body mass index (BMI) = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²); World Health Organization adult classes are read as underweight, normal, overweight and obese.
  • Waist-to-hip ratio = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference; it shows abdominal fat and is assessed by sex-specific WHO thresholds.
  • Ideal weight gives a reference weight from height and sex using four classic formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi).
  • Body fat is estimated from tape measurements with the US Navy method.
  • Basal metabolic rate estimates the daily energy used at rest.

Things to watch

  • BMI does not distinguish muscle mass, age or sex; it can mislead athletes and children.
  • For waist-to-hip ratio, measuring in the morning, fasting and at the same points keeps results consistent.
  • Different methods do not match exactly; look at the overall picture, not one number.

Results are estimates and do not replace medical advice, diagnosis or treatment; consult your doctor or dietitian for health decisions.
