Running Pace and Finish Time Calculator
Calculate your running pace per kilometre and average speed from distance and time, or your 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon finish time from a target pace.
Things to keep in mind:
- The calculation assumes an even pace; elevation, wind, heat, fatigue and stops at water stations change the actual time.
- GPS watches often measure slightly more than the official course distance, so your real pace may differ from the calculated one.
- Distances are in kilometres; pace per mile is not calculated.

About this tool
Running pace is how many minutes and seconds you need per kilometre. The calculator works both ways: it finds pace and average speed from distance and total time, or finish time from distance and a target pace. You can choose 5 km, 10 km, half marathon (21.0975 km), marathon (42.195 km) or any custom distance.
Formulas
- Total time (s) = hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds
- Pace (s/km) = total time ÷ distance; minutes = pace ÷ 60 (whole part), seconds = pace mod 60
- Finish time (s) = pace (s/km) × distance; hours = time ÷ 3600 (whole part), minutes = (time mod 3600) ÷ 60 (whole part), seconds = time mod 60
- Average speed (km/h) = distance × 3600 ÷ total time
Pace and finish time are first rounded to the nearest whole second and then split into minutes and seconds, so invalid values such as 4:60 never appear.
Example: to run a marathon in 3 hours 30 minutes (12,600 s) you need 12,600 ÷ 42.195 = 298.6 s/km, rounded 4:59/km; average speed is 12.06 km/h. A runner holding 5:30/km over a half marathon finishes in 330 × 21.0975 = 6962 s, i.e. 1:56:02.
How to use
- Choose whether to calculate pace or finish time.
- Select the distance; for a custom distance enter the kilometres.
- For pace enter the total time (hours, minutes, seconds); for finish time enter the target pace (minutes, seconds per km).
- Press Calculate.
Notes
Pace and finish time are rounded to the nearest whole second (HALF_UP) and then split into minutes/seconds and hours/minutes/seconds. Speed is rounded to 2 decimal places and computed from the unrounded time. In pace mode a time of 0 gives 0 for every result.
Frequently asked questions
It is the time needed to run one kilometre, written as minutes:seconds per km. A pace of 5:00/km means each kilometre takes 5 minutes.
Speed (km/h) = 3600 ÷ pace (s/km). For 5:00/km = 300 s/km: 3600 ÷ 300 = 12 km/h.
4 hours = 14,400 s; 14,400 ÷ 42.195 ≈ 341.3 s/km, i.e. about 5:41/km. Select the marathon and enter 4:00:00 to check.
The official marathon distance is 42.195 km and the half marathon is exactly half of it.
